Hot Work Hazards: Why the Right PPE Isn't Optional When Sparks Are Flying

Grinding, cutting, and welding are some of the most common tasks on a mine site or in a shop, and they're also some of the most dangerous if the right protective gear isn't in place. A single spark can cause a burn, start a fire, or lead to permanent eye damage in less than a second.

That's why hot work PPE needs to be treated as non negotiable, not an afterthought.

Here's what proper protection actually looks like on the job.

Eye and face protection comes first. Sparks travel further than most people expect, and they don't announce themselves before they hit. A full face shield paired with safety glasses underneath gives you two layers of defense, which matters when metal fragments are moving at high speed.

Flame resistant clothing matters just as much as the shield. Regular work clothes can melt or ignite from hot metal contact. FR rated jackets and coveralls are built to self extinguish and won't fuse to skin the way synthetic fabrics can.

Gloves need to match the task. Welding gloves are thicker and built for heat resistance, while grinding work often calls for something with better dexterity but still enough protection against abrasion and hot debris. Using the wrong glove for the job is a common shortcut that leads to injury.

Respiratory protection is easy to overlook until it's too late. Grinding and welding both produce fine particulate and fumes that build up in enclosed spaces. A properly rated respirator protects against long term lung damage that doesn't show symptoms until years later.

The bigger picture here is control. You can't control every hazard on a job site, but you can control whether your crew is wearing the right gear before the first spark flies. That's the difference between a close call and a serious incident report.
